In the latest episode (#84) of the Localization Fireside Chat, I had the incredible opportunity to sit down with Eddie Arrieta, the CEO of Multilingual Media, for a deep dive into the evolution of the localization industry, leadership in a changing world, and the impact of emerging technologies like artificial intelligence (AI). Eddie’s journey from his roots in Colombia to his current role as a global media leader is both inspiring and insightful, offering valuable lessons for anyone navigating the localization industry—or any industry undergoing rapid change.
In this blog post, I’ll share key takeaways from our conversation, highlighting Eddie’s perspective on the future of localization, the role of AI in content creation, and the importance of community and collaboration.
A Journey Rooted in Passion and Leadership
Eddie Arrieta’s story is one of passion, resilience, and a drive to create meaningful change. He hails from Sincelejo, Colombia, a city that shaped his entrepreneurial spirit and desire to make a difference. In our chat, Eddie recalled how his early experiences in Colombia and later in Wales and the United States shaped his worldview, opening his mind to the possibilities of global connections and collaboration.
Eddie’s early exposure to global issues through a scholarship at the United World Colleges ignited his passion for making a global impact. He later pursued higher education in the U.S., returning to Colombia to co-found Espacio, the first co-working space in Medellín, and Publicize, a PR company. His journey from Colombia to the helm of Multilingual Media is a testament to his leadership and vision for empowering the localization industry.
The Evolution of the Localization Industry
One of the most fascinating parts of our conversation was Eddie’s perspective on the localization industry’s transformation. He described how the industry is moving beyond traditional translation work and evolving into a more integrated part of global business operations. As businesses increasingly operate on a global scale, the demand for localization services is growing. Eddie pointed out that localization is no longer just about transforming content from one language to another; it’s about helping businesses communicate more effectively in different markets, adapting to cultural nuances, and creating meaningful connections with global audiences.
Eddie highlighted how the industry has become more interconnected than ever, with the lines between content creation, translation, and localization blurring. This interconnectedness has created new opportunities for businesses to innovate and find more efficient ways to serve their international customers. However, he also noted that the industry faces significant challenges, particularly in terms of embracing new technologies and adapting to the rapid pace of change.
AI and the Future of Content Creation
One of the most exciting aspects of our conversation was discussing the role of AI in localization. Eddie believes that AI is poised to play a transformative role in the industry, particularly in content creation. As AI tools like ChatGPT and DeepL become more sophisticated, they are enabling businesses to create and translate content faster and more accurately than ever before.
Eddie shared his vision of a future where we move beyond the traditional model of transforming content from one language to another and into a world where content is created directly in the target language. This shift, he believes, will allow businesses to create more culturally relevant content, tailored specifically to the needs and preferences of their global audiences.
However, Eddie was quick to point out that while AI can automate many aspects of content creation, the role of human expertise remains critical. AI might generate content, but humans will always be needed to refine it, ensuring that it resonates with local audiences on a deeper level. This balance between technology and human input is where Eddie sees the future of localization heading.
Collaboration as the Key to Success
Throughout our conversation, one theme stood out clearly: collaboration. Eddie emphasized the importance of community and cooperation in the localization industry. He believes that the future of the industry depends on businesses, associations, and individuals coming together to share knowledge, resources, and ideas.
Eddie’s leadership style is grounded in this belief. He shared that at Multilingual Media, one of his key strategies has been to foster relationships with partners, associations, universities, and thought leaders. By collaborating with others, he believes Multilingual Media can create more valuable content and serve as a platform for the industry to grow and evolve.
He also stressed the importance of elevating conversations around human resources within the industry. Eddie highlighted how critical it is for companies to invest in talent and create opportunities for professionals in the localization field. To this end, Multilingual Media has been working on initiatives to connect businesses with talent, helping to bridge the gap between job seekers and employers in the industry.
Looking Ahead: 2030 and Beyond
As we wrapped up our discussion, I asked Eddie to share his vision for the future of the localization industry. He painted a picture of a rapidly evolving landscape where technology continues to drive change, but human creativity and collaboration remain at the forefront. By 2030, Eddie envisions an industry that has fully embraced AI and generative content creation, with businesses focusing on creating content directly in target languages, rather than relying on traditional translation methods.
However, Eddie is also optimistic about the role of human expertise in this future. He believes that as technology takes on more of the repetitive tasks, professionals in the industry will be able to focus on higher-level work, such as refining content and ensuring cultural relevance. Ultimately, he sees the future of localization as one where technology and human expertise work hand-in-hand to create more meaningful, impactful content for global audiences.
