Robin Ayoub: Hey, good morning, everybody. This is Robin Ayoub from the Localization Fireside Chat. And welcome to another episode of our conversation here on the Localization Chat, where we bring you conversations that are casual and enlightening, helping localization professionals and industry outsiders understand how it works.

Today, we’re recording the 97th episode, and I’m honored to be joined by Philippe Mercier. Philippe comes to us from Brussels in Belgium. Hi, Robin! Philippe, bienvenue. Welcome to the channel.

Philippe Mercier: Thanks for having me, Robin. It’s a pleasure.

Robin Ayoub: Philippe, as we say on this channel, everybody’s got a story. Why don’t you get us started by telling us about yourself, maybe a little bit about your localization story?

Philippe’s Background in the Localization Industry

Philippe Mercier: Okay, well, I’m a software engineer. I started my career doing consulting work and writing. I’m the author of a dozen software programming books. Then, in 1996, I got involved in localization and translation, working on large projects. Since then, I’ve worked with various translation agencies, building tools to assist translators and training professionals.

The fascinating thing about the language industry is that it bridges cultures and communities. The work we do in connecting people through language is incredibly impactful.

Robin Ayoub: Absolutely! Now, for those unfamiliar with WordScope, can you tell us more about your company?

What is WordScope?

Philippe Mercier: At WordScope, our goal is to enhance translation workflows using AI. Before 2017, many CAT tools lacked deep AI integration. When DeepL introduced neural machine translation (NMT), I saw an opportunity to build a powerful, AI-driven translation tool that combines:

  • Terminology management
  • Machine translation post-editing (MTPE)
  • AI-powered text analysis

By integrating these features, WordScope helps translators work faster and smarter.

How WordScope Helps Translators Increase Productivity

Robin Ayoub: You mentioned earlier that some translators have doubled their income using AI. Can you share an example?

Philippe Mercier: Absolutely! One of our early adopters, a translator in her 50s, had never used a CAT tool before. After switching to WordScope, she saw a 100% increase in her income because she could translate more efficiently without sacrificing quality.

Key Benefits of WordScope:

  • Faster project turnaround times
  • Higher translation accuracy with AI assistance
  • Seamless integration of multiple machine translation (MT) engines
  • Terminology consistency across documents

The AI vs. Human Debate: Can AI Replace Translators?

Robin Ayoub: There’s an ongoing debate in the industry—can AI replace human translators?

Philippe Mercier: AI is not a replacement but an assistant. Some translators fear AI, while others embrace it. AI can enhance productivity, but humans are still essential for:

  • Contextual accuracy
  • Cultural adaptation
  • Ensuring high-quality output

Future of AI in Translation: What’s Next?

Robin Ayoub: What’s next for WordScope and AI-driven CAT tools?

Philippe Mercier: In 2025, we are focusing on:

  • Expanding AI-driven proofreading features
  • Enhancing terminology integration
  • Improving compatibility with existing CAT tools
  • Continuing to optimize AI for real-world translation needs

We’re also working on allowing translators to customize AI-generated suggestions, making the experience more tailored to their workflow.

Final Thoughts & Takeaways

Robin Ayoub: This was a fantastic conversation! Philippe, any final thoughts?

Philippe Mercier: I encourage translators to explore AI-powered tools. Don’t fear AI—embrace it as a tool to enhance your skills and efficiency.
