From Financial Translator to Localization Leader
Melissa’s path into the industry began as a Financial Translator, a precise and demanding discipline that gave her an early appreciation for the gap between what words say and what they mean in context. That instinct for nuance followed her into a role at SDL (now RWS), where she founded the English Office and built a 40-person team and freelancer network spanning 55 source languages. The experience of operating at that kind of scale, across that many linguistic and cultural contexts, shaped how she thinks about language as a strategic function rather than a cost center.
What Cultural Intelligence Actually Means
Cultural Intelligence, or CQ, is the ability to align content, campaigns, and digital experiences with the local expectations, values, and behaviors of a given market. It goes beyond translation. A brand can produce grammatically correct copy in any language and still get the tone, imagery, humor, or values completely wrong for the audience receiving it.
Melissa frames it simply: translation asks “did we say it correctly?” Cultural Intelligence asks “will this actually land?”
Color is a useful example. White signals purity and new beginnings in many Western markets. In parts of Asia it is associated with mourning. A campaign that ignores that distinction does not just fall flat. It can damage brand trust in ways that take years to repair.
How AI Amplifies the Problem
The risk with AI is not that it produces bad content. The risk is that it produces culturally unaware content at a speed and volume that outpaces any human review layer. A single prompt can generate localized assets across 20 markets before a cultural reviewer has opened their laptop. When the AI’s training data skews toward majority-language, Western-dominant content, the cultural blind spots are baked in from the start.
Melissa points to specific content categories where these missteps happen most often: advertising copy, UX microcopy, and AI-generated imagery prompts where visual cues carry significant cultural weight. The further downstream an error travels before it is caught, the more expensive it becomes to fix.
Building Culturally Aware Workflows
The solution is not to slow AI down. It is to place the right human expertise at the right point in the pipeline before content ships. Melissa walks through what that looks like in practice: identifying which content types carry the highest cultural risk, building review checkpoints specifically for cultural appropriateness rather than just linguistic accuracy, and thinking about CQ as a discipline that belongs in brand and product conversations, not just in the localization team’s queue.
She also addresses the prompt layer directly. A culturally aware AI prompt looks different from a standard one. It carries context about the audience’s values, references, and sensitivities, not just the language. That context has to come from somewhere, and right now it mostly comes from experienced humans who know the market.
Where Cultural Intelligence Is Heading
Melissa sees CQ moving from a localization function into a strategic capability that sits at the level of brand, marketing, and product leadership. As global markets become more accessible through AI-powered tools, the companies that treat cultural intelligence as a core competency will build more durable relationships with international audiences. The ones that treat it as a translation checkbox will keep making expensive mistakes at scale.
